Last Saturday night Matthew and I attended a fireside for young couples (I know, we don't technically qualify) from eight stakes. Elder David Warner and his wife Allison spoke, along with Bishop Dean Davies and his wife Darla, Elder Craig Christensen and his wife Debbie, and Elder Russell Ballard. Here are a few things I picked up about marriage:
There are many things we cannot control in life. The only thing we have control over is to put our hand in the hand of the Lord. The Atonement can save us every day (Sister Warner).
As the Lord comes into your marriage, you become closer and closer to one another. Ask, seek, and knock together (Elder Warner).
Marriage is worth the work! The payoff is wonderful! Welcome your spouse home (Sister Davies).
Bring holiness and commitment into the marriage (Sister Christensen).
The Book of Mormon has instruction on marriage and parenthood. The way you bring heaven into your marriage relationship is through prayer (Elder Christensen).
Kneel every night together and say a prayer of gratitude. Don't order God around by telling Him what to do and when to do it. Thank Him.
You must be a good listener.
Ask for forgiveness.
Learn to talk to each other and listen to each other.
You need the opportunity to express yourself in a relationship.
Really learn to listen. Be slower in your response.
What matters most in life? Jesus is the Christ. If you are anchored to Him you have the most precious thing.
The anchor is not what I've accumulated. It's my family.
In the sunset, the most precious thing you have is your family.
Cherish each other.
Love each other.
Don't raise your voice.
Spend time outside if you have to and calm down.
Be quick to life, explain, and forgive.
Fix whatever needs fixing on your knees.
The Holy Spirit will guide you as to what you should say and what you should not say (Elder Ballard).
