I recently read an article by Scott Anderson, CEO and President of Zion's Bank.

Anderson shared these words from George Washington:
"Religion and morality are the essential pillars of civil society.  We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion.  Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.  It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

Then these words from Scott Anderson--"Government builds prisons, deploys armies and police officers, provides welfare and child protective services.  But those programs mostly react to society's big problems; they don't address the causes and roots.  Government can put ambulances at the bottom of the cliff, but only citizens living moral lives prevent falls over the cliff."

"We all have a stake in encouraging good values.  The tax costs of irresponsible, immoral behavior are enormous.  Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent annually on prisons, law enforcement, alcoholism, drug abuse and the costs of parental neglect.  Thank goodness we do have government to address, as best it can, bad citizen behavior.  But if too many people go over the cliff, government, meaning all of us taxpayers, will simply be overwhelmed."

"The people who are really holding the country together aren't the politicians.  They are the loving parents, the caring Scoutmasters, the Sunday School teachers, the dedicated public school teachers, the grandparents, the mentors.  A government that derives its power and legitimacy from the people simply won't survive if most people don't follow universal religious values."

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Anderson and think he put his words together well. The religious and moral state of the country is concerning.
