Today I listened to these nine students play pieces that they had worked on for weeks.  Though the 2-3 minute performances were splendid, it is the journey, the striving that is delicious to me.  To have practiced a section over and over again, mastering it until it feels completely natural, that is the joy of it.  I remember how they could barely play a few lines of their recital pieces at first, let alone a page.  They would take a measure at a time at first, often with just one hand and then the other.  Little by little, day by day, they figured it out and I'm happy for them.
