Today in one of my classes we talked about this piece of art.  It is called "Calf-Bearer," and it dates back to 550 BC.  This piece was found in pieces on a hill near Athens. Here is a description:
The bond between man and beast is conveyed simply and sensitively. It is a well-though-out and beautifully executed composition: The tiny calf is draped around the man's neck and shoulders and their heads are close and aligned.  Diagonals formed by his arms and the calf's legs join to form a prominent X shape over the man's chest.  The man's lips are curled into what looks like a smile, although it is not a smile at all as we would define it.  Scholars believe that this so-called archaic smile signified that the person depicted in stone was alive.

What a treasure to find a piece of art made so long ago.
