In the introduction of the book Crossing to Safety (book by Wallace Stegner), Terry Tempest Williams wrote these lines:
Part of the tension of being human is found in our desire for, and love affair with, both risk and security. What do we risk in our quest for security? What do we secure in a life or risk? And where are the motivations behind creating a life of meaning in the presence of uncertainty?
These lines are thought provoking. These lines have prompted me to think about my life, my preferences and tendencies, and how I value both risk and security. I have concluded that I love security more than risk. When I am in the security of my home, or my routine, or my inner circle of family, I feel settled and peaceful. I like routine and lists and predictability. Sometimes I have to talk myself into risks, however when I take a risk and leave my comfort zone, I almost always enjoy it, learn from it, relish it, and come back to my secure cocoon a better person. Life is a combination of both--security and risks. Sometimes risks come your way by nature of happen chance, and sometimes you can invite risk into your life by initiating it yourself. Both risk and security are needed and both are beneficial.
