The picture above looks like a peaceful place, but on June 27th many years ago, Carthage Jail was anything but peaceful.  The innocent Mormon prophet Joseph Smith was murdered by a wild mob.  My heart swells with emotion as I think of Joseph Smith and the numerous things that he accomplished.  Joseph was a chosen servant of God and though he was killed, his light, and the light of the gospel still shine brightly.  I owe a great debt of gratitude to Joseph Smith for his part in the restoration and organization of the church, the translation of the Book of Mormon, the revelations  received, and His words and testimony.  Joseph never turned his back on the Lord nor denied the spiritual experiences he had, though he endured great persecution and ridicule.  I believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and that he did indeed see God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ.  I am honored to belong to the same church that Joseph Smith did.  He was not a perfect man but I revere him, respect him, admire him, and express gratitude to the Lord for Joseph's life and example.
