My daughter shared a fantastic talk with me given by Julie Beck at General Conference in 2010. Here are some of my favorite lines:
A good woman must constantly resist alluring and deceptive messages from
many sources telling her that she is entitled to more time away from
her responsibilities and that she deserves a life of greater ease and
independence.
The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is
the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life.
Insight found in scripture accumulates over time, so it is important to spend some time in the scriptures every day.
Because personal revelation is a constantly renewable source of
strength, it is possible to feel bathed in help even during turbulent
times.
When a girl advances into Relief Society or when a woman is baptized
into the Church, she becomes part of a sisterhood that strengthens her
in her preparation for eternal life. Entrance into Relief Society
signifies that a woman can be trusted and relied upon to make a
significant contribution in the Church. She continues to progress as an
individual without receiving much outward credit or praise.
May I add a few thoughts: I really like how Sister Beck pointed out that the single most important skill that we can acquire in life is the ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation. Talk about setting us apart from the world--this is not something that the world seeks but something that we deem both necessary and critical to our spirituality. I would list the gift of the Holy Ghost as one of my most prized possessions. I love what Sister Beck says about the women of the Relief Society--that we progress (and serve) without receiving much outward credit or praise. That statement is beautiful to me and very evident. Ladies all around me serve and progress without fanfare, but they do it because they love the Lord. Again, very different from the world. Spiritual women do not need the applause, fame, or adulation of the world. Spiritual women find their identity and receive their applause and peace from the pure fountain--even Jesus Christ himself.
