Yesterday in Relief Society, the teacher asked, "So why do you read the scriptures? What do you get out of it? Do you read the scriptures because of duty or out of love?"
Here is my answer--
There have been some days where I have read the scriptures out of duty. I believe that even if one reads the scriptures out of duty, one can still be blessed for it. If you are obedient and read the scriptures every day, you will come to understand them better and you will come to love them.
There are many blessings that come from reading the scriptures, some of which are visible to the eye, and some of which are invisible. Some of the blessings include: one's vision becomes clearer, the temptation to sin is decreased, you come to know the nature of God, the plan of salvation is explained, the Atonement is explained and you come to appreciate what the Savior did for you, you have a power and a protection that comes into your life that shields you from the buffetings of Satan, and you have a desire to become Christlike.
Many times I kneel and plead with the Lord and I don't receive an answer right then, but later, sometimes hours, or days, or weeks later, while I am reading the scriptures, I hear an answer from the Lord. Sometimes the answer comes while reading the text, and sometimes the answer is not written on the page but is an impression that comes to my mind. While reading the scriptures, I receive answers to my prayers and I feel that the Lord is talking to me.
How could I set that aside? I do not want to miss the messages the Lord has for me.
