This is what was said about callings in April General Conference:
We do not "step down" when we are released and we do not "step up" when we are called. There is no "up or down" in the service of the Lord. There is only forward or backward, and that difference depends on how we accept and act upon our releases and our callings.
(Dallin H. Oaks, General Conference 4-14)
Let me add what PresidentLorenzo Snow said on this subject:
Where the Lord plants us, there we are to stand.
(Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Lorenzo Snow, pg. 175)
Eliza R. Snow reported: Joseph Smith gave instructions respecting the different offices and the necessity of every individual acting in the sphere allotted him or her...
It was the folly and nonsense of the human heart for a person to be aspiring to other stations than those to which they are appointed of God for them to occupy; that it was better for individuals to magnify their respective callngs. Everyone should aspire only to magnify his own office and calling.
(Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith, pgs. 111, 112)
This is one thing that I really like about our church. There is no posturing or campaigning for callings. The Lord calls, through his priesthood leaders, who he would like to serve and where. A past Bishop of our ward now serves in the nursery. The former Relief Society President is now a primary teacher and those two individuals are faithful and excited about their present callings, just as they were with their former "big" callings. In this church, everyone strives to build the kingdom and save souls no matter where they are serving.
