Cecily Smith wrote an article in the April 2019 Ensign titled "Living in Grace and Gratitude." I liked these words from her:
"There is a beauty and clarity that comes from simplicity."
And this: "I've learned to leave margins in my days. Those open spaces have allowed for a greater influence of the Spirit, room to serve someone in need, and the ability to be present with my family."
Now some comments about these two quotes, starting with the quote about simplicity. My husband's work associate sets up seven Christmas trees in his house. I have one and I'm feeling fine about that. I have no judgment for this associate as he probably loves Christmas trees and wants to set up that many, but I don't need to. I cooked a lot over the weekend and we have had leftovers for days and it has been all right with us. Leftovers are simple and fine. My morning routine is simple but sets me on the right track for the day. Yes, I agree with Cecily. There can be beauty and clarity in simplicity.
I also agree with her in regards to allowing some open space in the day. I have tried really hard to be better at that this December. Usually December is so full of tasks and commitments that there is no time to sit and ponder, listen to music, or listen to someone who needs to talk. What a shame as this should be the time, more than any other time of the year, when our hearts are softened and we think about the Savior. Reading, praying, fasting, and participating in Light the World have all helped provide quiet moments of reflection.
