Our Ward YW President wanted Evening of Excellence to be a special night for the young women and their parents. The Personal Progress program is ending and this may be the last Evening of Excellence, or at least the last time the girls talk about this program.
The table settings were lovely, the meal was delicious, the blown-up pictures of the girls were striking, but all of that paled in comparison to the highlight of the night--when each girl stood up and talked about something she has been working on.
One young woman recently put together backpacks with school supplies for needy children.
One visited every temple in the state of Utah to do temple baptisms.
One learned how to play the ukulele while another ran cross country.
One young woman said Personal Progress had been hard for her. She didn't always want to be nice to her brother, but she remembered a commitment she had made to show love to him for two weeks.
One sewed a dress last month and visits her grandma weekly.
A couple of the girls learned how to sew and then made thirteen quilts.
One brought a bicycle tire and told about fixing bikes for one of her ten hour projects.
One brought a robot she had made and another finished the Book of Mormon.
Do the young women realize how important it is to set goals and work to achieve them?
Do they realize that their progress is more than just the program and the medallion? It is about what is happening to them on the inside.
Do they know how the decisions they are making now, such as striving to stay on the covenant path, will help to solidify their spiritual foundations in the years to come?
I'm not sure they can fully appreciate how these goals have stretched and expanded them.
They are more strong and smart and humble than they used to be.
They are more like the Savior.
I love them!
