In Italy we visited a number of fancy churches. The walls were decorated with painted frescoes or statues. The ceilings were high and intricate in their detail. Some ceilings painted in gold, others in fanciful patterns, and great attention was given to every single detail, both on the exterior of the building and in the interior. Even the floors were made from beautiful marble slabs, or detailed tile designs.
After days of viewing such churches, Matthew and I discussed:
Do you need a fancy church to feel close to God?
Were the amazing and monstrous churches created as a tribute to God, or were they made as a tribute/memorial to the church/political leader(s) who asked that they be built?
Can one feel the Spirit in a simple church?
