Here are two great sculptures by Michelangelo, one named "Pieta" (top), carved in Rome in 1499 and the other his famous "David," carved in a shed in Florence  and wheeled out after three years of work and secrecy in 1504. Masterpieces!

William Wallace wrote, "Just as David slew Goliath, so did the young Michelangelo conquer the giant block of marble." In carving "David," Michelangelo worked on a piece of marble that had been carved from the earth forty years earlier.  Marble is most easily carved when it is freshly quarried because as it ages and is exposed to the elements, it becomes increasingly harder to work with. Three other sculptors had tried to work on this particular piece of marble, each making it more difficult for the next.

The young David is a representation or image of Michelangelo; two men centuries apart, standing up to something or someone that has defied others, and garnering the strength to face the foe and conquer.
