I just finished this book and I think Hyeonseo is an incredible person with an incredible life story. As I read about her life in North Korea, then China, then South Korea, I was filled with a gratitude for my upbringing in America. I have taken for granted many privileges. I have the right to talk about whatever I would like. I can share a difference of opinion. I have relationships with people in my family and community built on trust, not fear. I am able to travel, work, study, recreate, worship, purchase, and marry as I please. I am not forced or coerced. I do not rely on bribes or acquaintances in high places to get special treatment.
I recommend this book and I applaud Hyeonseo.
