During each of these incredibly challenging episodes in our nation's history, the outcome was not assured. Many of those who suffered through these crises surely had reached the conclusion that their cause was doomed to fail. Indeed, there had to be times when not just a few but most of those involved in these struggles believed their effort was in vain. But God did reveal His hand in His own due time--sometimes waiting until the final hour. And if this is true, why did He do it? What is it about this nation that would justify His intervention? Could it be that America represents something important to God? Though it's daunting to attempt to answer such questions, may we suggest two plausible explanations: First, America is the wellspring of liberty and freedom on this earth. Second, it has been the repository of--and an example of--certain virtues that, if emulated, would bring more happiness, prosperity, and well-being to all.
God cares about liberty. He cares that men have free will and be allowed to exercise self-determination. And he desires this for all of His children, not just for those in this nation. It has always been so and will always be so.
I am grateful to live in America and enjoy the "wellspring of liberty and freedom."
