A friend recommended this book to me.  She told me that she and her husband had read through the book together and had been strengthened by it.  They then gave a copy of the manual to each of their married children and encouraged them to read it.  Matthew and I purchased a copy for each of our married children and we are reading through our own copy.  Last night we read a section on "Communication" including these quotes from Marvin J. Ashton:

Be the kind of family member who is willing to take time to be available.  Develop the ability and self-discipline to think of other family members and their communication needs ahead of your own.  Shed the very appearance of preoccupation in self.

It takes personal sacrifice to communicate when conditions are
right for the other person.

Listening is a tied-in part of loving.

It is easy to point out mistakes and pass judgment.  Sincere compliments and praise come much harder from most of us.

These points hit me and I resolved to do better in the area of listening, fully listening, and being positive.
