This picture was taken at our family reunion last week. Many family members had gathered to play a game of ultimate frisbee on the grass outside the lodge and after the game someone suggested that everyone leap up together. I know that the faces are all blurry in the picture, but the picture represents my happy feeling of being a part of this great extended family.
What does a close-knit, supportive, fun, spiritual, sincere, energetic, caring extended family do for someone?
I know what it does for me.
I feel enriched after being with the extended family members. I feel cared about. I feel inspired to be better and do better. I want to care about them in return and serve them. I have many nieces and nephews that I feel parental towards. I know that my children have aunts and uncles who feel parental towards them.
My husband has some wonderful siblings and spouses. We are united in our desire to look after Grandpa and Grandma. We are united in our desire to build family unity and remain close. We are united in our desire to love and teach new children that are being added to the family, and we are united in our love for the Lord. But whoa, everything has not gone perfectly for us in life and there are problems and issues to deal with, but the caravan (family) keeps pressing forward and we lean on each other for support.
Some of this is imperceptive, nonetheless it is real. I feel grateful.
