The process of building habits is actually the process of becoming yourself (pg. 37). We are continually undergoing microevolutions of the self. Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity (pg. 38).
One of the most effective
things you can do to build better habits is to join a culture where your
desired behavior is the normal behavior. New habits seem achievable when you
see others doing them every day. Surround yourself with people who have the
habits you want to have yourself. You’ll
rise together (pg. 117).
If you want to master a
habit, the key is to start with repetition, not perfection. You don’t need to map out every feature of a
new habit. You just need to practice it.
You just need to get the reps in. Repeating a habit leads to clear physical
changes in the brain (pg. 143).
The only way to become
excellent is to be endlessly fascinated by doing the same thing over and over
(pg. 236).
